679 Artifact 2: Digital Formative Assessment Tools



For my second artifact I decided to pick the formative assessments I made for module 3, but also would work for Gamification in module 8.  I chose to make a quizlet for an important objective in our curriculum that I wanted students to Master.  

Objective:

Understand the basic anatomy and physiology of gas exchange in the mammalian respiratory system.


Since I am about to test on the Respiratory system, I decided to make two formative assessments to assess if my students were ready to take their upcoming summative assessment on the anatomy and physiology of the respiratory system.  Using the material I am required to make for my graduate courses in my classroom is really what has made this experience at St. Francis so valuable for me!  I could see this strategy becoming beneficial in the future for my Anatomy classes.  

I am envisioning in a 1 month unit for one of the body systems, once a week checking for understanding with an online formative assessment tool to make sure the students have mastered the material.  Also, it would give the students feedback if they are ready for the next week, or if they need to go back and study before we move on and add more material. 


Formative assessment tools: Here are the two tools I decided to use.  They are pretty different in nature, but should have similar outcomes in providing immediate feedback to the students on how they are keeping up with the material from that week. 

Another benefit to this class is that I found out which tool I enjoy utilizing for this type of formative assessment.  I really struggled with socrative and will no longer use it in the classroom.  On the opporsite note, I loved making and utilizing quizlets in the classroom!  So much so that I have already used dozens among my two classes.  Here is a screenshot of the quizlet and a direct link to each of the assessments.  From there, students can take quizzes, make flashcards, and I can even share them out to students through REMIND.com.  Awesome resource:

678 Module 8 Discussion

Hello Class, What a topic for this week's blog... Fake News.  Obviously, this saying has caught wind with our current President's use of the term at every press conference.  In fact, it is probably the only thing I agree with him on and understand what he is talking about... Especially as a science teacher! Teaching students about reputable websites or sources has always been a critical aspect of science education.  But now, more than ever, with the internet and freedom to publish any nonsense you want with social media, teaching the difference between credible and reliable resources is an extremely important aspect of the curriculum.
